"The southern part of this barren abandoned country has an allurement without comparison. Pre-historical disasters and storms left an amount of wonders carved in the hard warm land. The Fish River Canyon, one of the biggest wonders of Africa, is carved in the earth to a dept of 50Cm and the river twists and turns like a muddy python through the canyon. The 161km long and 27km wide ravine is surrounded by high, forbidding cliffs. The awesome grandeur of the canyon is surpassed only by the Grand Canyon in the USA. Near the end of this gulf is Ai-Ais, a hot water source and a true oasis in this barren area. The water boils at 65°C out of the earth crust. We get he chance to swim in this warm spring water. The indoor pools are shallow with seats and spouters at the sides for those who want to relax. We spend the night in Karasburg."

Captain Jackson wrote, "The Germans opened fire at 7.15 a.m. on the 26th having blown up the railway-line at Kilo 82. Firing continued for four hours; by that time there was not a line of shelters or bivouacs in the whole camp that was not riddled with holes." Things got so hot that the Germans were expected to succeed in their objective, but Jackson heard later from a German prisoner that the fire from the Union troops, especially from the armoured cars and Maxims, was so strong that they were unable to advance against it. From Headquarters at Swakopmund, General Botha continually rang up for information on the latest developments. A special train was sent off carrying 86,000 rounds of ammunition, escorted by 200 men and a squadron of Imperial Light Horse. It should have arrived at 10 a.m., but it did not get through until 2.15 p.m. when the fighting was all over, as it had been delayed at Arandis, there being no water for the engine.

Historical extract from the book "Country Towns of the Transvaal".

"The go-ahead little settlement of Amersfoort originally founded as a "kerkplaats" by the Reverend Lion Cachet (whose name betrays his Huguenot extraction), is dependant for its prosperity on the wool trade, which is carried on in a brisk and bustling fashion. Before the late war it was a neat, thriving, stone-built "dorp" but was burnt out and destroyed during the course of military operations, and has since been in the process of re-building, repairing, and general restoration. As the business of restocking the farms and re-organising the farming industry is bound to be tedious, the population of Amersfoort may be said to have been undergoing a period of unusual depression, but there are good hopes of a speedy improvement and a resumption of former prosperity."

Amanzimtoti (L14): 28

Name:Amanzimtoti, KwaZulu-Natal

The official website of the Durban coastal resort of Amanzimtoti.
amanzimtoti.kzn.org.za/

Google count: 372 000 (incorrectly spelt as Amamzimtoti gives one 1700!)

Date: 25 June 2008

Historic fact:

After the start of the construction of the South Coast railway line from Durban in 1895 the town of Amanzimtoti evolved around the railway siding on the bank of the Manzimtoti River – named after its pleasing “sweet water” by the Zulu King, Shaka. The first hotel opened its door there three years later and this booming tourist destination hasn’t stopped growing since. Today’s Amanzimtoti offers visitors excellent accommodation, restaurants, seaside entertainment and shopping. Other towns and villages along this section of South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal South Coast include:

UMBOGINTWINI
Just 24 km south of Durban the part residential/part industrial Umbogintwini came into its own with the construction of an explosives factory on the banks of the Mbokodweni River in 1909. Today’s urban sprawl has linked it inextricably to the town of Amanzimtoti.

DOONSIDE
A suburb of the Amanzimtoti Municipality, Doonside took its name from one of its original resident’s house called “Lorna Doone”.

WARNER BEACH
So named because in 1910 Mr. T. A. Warner, the then government surveyor, was sent here to survey an area planned for the settlement of pensioners. Quite prophetic in a way for the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, like Florida with its warm climate, has become a real pensioner’s paradise.

ILLOVO BEACH
Named after the Lovu River – “elephant” in Zulu – Illovo Beach’s recorded history stretches back to about 1860 when MacDougal’s riverside store was a welcome watering hole for passing travellers. Then, with the increase of traffic, a Mr. Pearce opened an inn on the southern bank in 1862 and it was his son, William, who eventually started the Illovo Sugar Mill in the year 1890.

KARRIDENE
Karridene was named after the benevolent Rand mining magnet W. Karri-Davis who took it upon himself to build a curative centre here for miners suffering from phthisis.

Historic fact:
the story is as follows: "At that time it was common for the Xhosa employees living on the farm area around the mill to own cattle and these cattle were allowed to graze alongside those of Mr P.F.D.Burmeister. During a drought the grazing was badly depleted and Mr Burmeister found it necessary to hire grazing from a farm in the Amabele area. Some of the cattle from Burmeister's farm, including those of his employee, were sent to graze at this farm.

Unfortunately, due to their poor condition, some of Burmeister's and the employee's cattle died. The employee went to Mr Burmeister and demanded compensation since "he had not asked permission to send his (the employee's) cattle to this hired land and he was therefore responsible for their death." Mr P.F.D. Burmeister refused to pay the "large compensation" demanded and said that he too had lost some cattle. Whilst arguments concerning this matter continued, the mill was burnt down. The arsonist was thought to be the employee "James", who was observed by Mr Adolf Frache't sitting on his white blanket on a hill overlooking the mill whilst it burnt down.

Kei Rail is currently a weekend daytime passenger service between East London and Mthatha. A one-way trip costs R30 and tickets are available for sale at the East London, Amabele, Komga, Butterworth and Mthatha stations, or from mobile ticket sellers.

Mhlahlo said that the service would be integrated with other modes of transport to allow for better service delivery for the passengers and people of the rural communities.

Passengers will initially be transported by bus between East London and Amabele station. In addition, there will be a bus service between King William's Town and Amabele for Kei Rail ticket holders.

Once passengers reach their desired station, they are transported to the nearest public transport pick-up point, if it is far from the station, to make it easier for them to reach their final destinations.

He added that in order for the department to support this passenger service, it is currently refurbishing additional passenger coaches, which will provide better comfort for passengers.

A total of 20 coaches will be used, with ten seater coaches used for economy class, two seater coaches used for business class, four six-sleeper coaches, and four four-sleeper coaches.

"The department will allocate R30-million during this financial year to provide these coaches," said Mhlahlo.

To ensure the safety of passengers, members of the newly established South African Police Service (SAPS) Eastern Cape Railway Unit, will be deployed inside the trains and at the stations working together with the private security companies that have been hired by SARCC Metrorail.

"Already, there are 145 members employed in this unit and have been deployed at contact points.

Amahlathi is Settler country, and the home of Xhosa kings. It is steeped in history, tradition and culture. More frontier battles have arguably been fought in the district than anywhere else in South Africa. Battles were fought between the British soldiers and the Xhosa warriors for over 100 years. Yet the area is considered to be the cradle of democracy for Southern Africa and the rest of the African continent. The grave of the late King Sandile is at Izidenge forest.

Aside from its natural beauty, the region's tourist attractions include historical-cultural sites and popular outdoor activities such as bird watching, water recreation and sports at Gubu and Wriggleswade Dam.

The municipality abounds with architecture reflective of its past settler history - predominantly British and German influences. This is evident in town names such as Stutterheim, Cathcart and Keiskamahoek

The Amatole Hiking Trail was recently voted the best in SA by the Getaway Magazine, the greater part of which falls within the jurisdiction of the Amahlathi municipality. Mountain Bike trails has also been developed at Cathcart.

The municipality is also host to the Mgwali Village where tourists can experience African traditions in a village setting.

The existing manufacturing sector in the Amahlathi includes the timber products, these firms assist in reduction of unemployment and economic growth of this area.

Historical overview of Modimolle Local Municipality
Modimolle means ‘Place of Spirits’, referring to the prominent hill clearly visible from the N1 road. Many locals regard the hill as sacred. In addition, Modimolle Hill is said to have been the inspiration for the design of the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria whose architect, Gerhard Moerdyk, also designed the Reformed Church in Modimolle town.

When a group of religious Voortrekkers reached a river flanked with reeds and flowing north, with a pyramid-shaped hill nearby, they deduced from the maps in their Bibles that they had traversed the whole of Africa and reached Egypt. They called the place Nylstroom, literally meaning Nile River.

Alkmaar (K8): 23

Name: Alkmaar

Google count:5,370 for Alkmaar
Date: 23 June 2008

Historic fact:

Nelspruit was named after the owners of the original farm - the three brothers Nel. It began with the construction of a station up the Crocodile river valley, built on their farm. Nelspruit was established as a railhead of the first section of construction on the railway from Mozambique to Pretoria. A time lapse in the Railway construction contract allowed the rail company to raise finance for continued construction of the railway, and during this time Nelspruit became the focal point of the Lowveld - goods still had to be transported to the interior by oxwagon from Nelspruit.

Hugh Lanion Hall (1858-1940) arrived in the area in 1890 and established one of the greatest citrus and subtropical fruit estates in the country, which today is know by the name of Hall and Sons Limited.
The bridge over the Komati River was completed at the end of May 1891 and the railhead reached Komatipoort Station on 1 July 1892. On 1 October it reached Hectorspruit Station; on 28 December it had arrived in Malelane, and it eventually reached Krokidilpoort Station in April 1892. The railhead reached Nelspruit and was put into commission on 20 June 1892. Construction continued and by 1 June 1893 it was at Alkmaar, and on 20 January 1894 at Waterval Onder. Wateval Boven was reached on 20 June 1894 and the line was completed when the last bolt was driven by President Kruger in November 1894.

Though the line was in commission by 1st January 1895 it was not formally opened until 27 June, when the Volksraad adjourned for the officicial opening and proclaimed 8,9, and 10 July as public holidays in Pretoria. Every burgher was eligible for a free ticket to and from Lourenco Marques (Maputo).

The penetration of the Lowveld by settlement was for many years stifled by two natural barriers - Malaria, transmitted to man by the Anopheles Mosquito, and Nagana, transmitted to cattle, horses and dogs by the Tsetse-fly., Only once the two had been defeated was it possible for large-scale immigration into the area.

In 1896 the rinderpest swept through the country killing almost all the cattle. However this would turn out to be a blessing in disguise in that it also rid the country of the tsetse-fly. The link between the disappearance of the rinderpest and the fly is not known. It was only after the the Anglo-Boer War, when cattle first re-entered the Lowveld, that the disappearance of the fly was discovered.

The theory by Sir Patrick Mansonand others, and the proof by Major Roland Ross of the link between Malarial Fever and mosquitos allowed researchers to develop ways to combat Malaraia.

In the 1930's the Government of the day decided that the time had come to fight an all-out battle against Malaria. The results of this all-out attack on the disease were little short of miraculous and when, at a later date, D.D.T became available, the victory was won. In the comparatively short space of 8 years Malaria cases admitted to hospitals dropped from some 2000 per annum to 200.

Effective control of this deadly disease helped the community in this valley to surge ahead and Nelspruit grew to be one of the largest producers of tobacco, litchis , mangoes , avocados etc.

Nespruit is now a flourishing town with beautiful streets shaded by flowering trees. The town itself, its rich history, and the many attractions in the surrounding areas close by, make it a major tourist attraction.Perhaps most attractive of all, is its proximity to the famous Kruger National Park.

Title: Unemployment gets the boot in Alicedale
---------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------

A joint business venture has helped reduce unemployment in the Eastern Cape town of Alicedale by over 60 percent over the last three years writes Michael Appel.

Four years ago, the tiny community of Alicedale was suffering the effects of 95 percent unemployment and extreme poverty.

Situated on the Bushman's River some 50 km from the bustle of the varsity city of Grahamstown, Alicedale neighbours the magnificent Shamwari Game Reserve nestled amid dense semi arid vegetation of acacias, aloes and the indigenous and protected fynbos.

The railway was completed in 1873.

By the mid 1870s, the town was flourishing, acting as a midpoint between the two cities of Grahamstown and PE. In 1996, however, the railway closed down and the town's gradual recession led to high unemployment rates and entrenched poverty.

In 2003, a joint initiative between Mantis Collection, a company specialising in boutique accommodation and game reserves, and the Eastern Cape Government was established.

Plans were drawn up for development which would actively involve the community and create sustainable development through tourism.

Thus, the incredible Bushman Sands Hotel and Golf Course was born, opening its doors in October 2004.

The hotel building was crafted by Scottish masons in the early 1900's, and was used as Railway Training College.

The painstaking restoration of the national monument involved "numbering the original bricks, in order to put each back in its original place", said General Manager (GM) of Bushman Sands Herman Muller.

Earlier this year, President Thabo Mbeki hosted the International Investors Council (IIC) conference in Alicedale bearing testimony to the town's new found status.

Mr Muller told BuaNews the presidency was intent on hosting the event in a portable marquee, however, after local consultation, it was decided that Bushman Sands, following a generous donation from its stakeholders, would help to renovate the town's original train station.

"About R1.4 million was spent on the train station getting it ready for the conference," said the GM.

The newly renovated R1.4 million conference centre is these days available to the local community for weddings and celebrations at an astonishing R25 a day.

The uniquely quaint town houses a surprising nine churches for its 4 000 strong population.

The town has one petrol station, open only Mondays to Fridays, as it is owned by one of the pastors who undoubtedly has other work to do on Sundays.

Under the guidance and leadership of Bushman Sands, the local community were given land and all the implements to grow an array of vegetables and have "recently grown their third crop," said the GM.

Community members are drawn in by Bushman Sands in various employment opportunities, and the demand for labour has grown in the construction industry as demand for a house on the Bushman Sands Golf Estate spirals.

The resulting development in Alicedale has resulted in a massive drop in unemployment from 95 percent to 28 percent said Mr Muller.

The train which runs through the hotel grounds and golf estate used to run between Grahamstown and PE only once a week, however, it now does the trip three times a week.

Further exciting news for the community of Alicedale is that the South African Rugby Institute (SARI) has identified the remote town as the site for its new academy which will include rugby fields, dormitories, a High Performance Centre (HPC) gym and other facilities.

Mr Muller said SARI members and other stakeholders are set to meet in Alicedale on 23 August 2007 to discuss the new development.

He confirmed that experts predict Alicedale will become the new hub for San and Khoi rock art in the near future, bringing promises of even further growth for the Eastern Cape's picturesque town. - BuaNews

A little town situated 20 kilometres to the east of Fort Beaufort, Alice grew around a military
encampment known as Fort Hare. It became well known as a missionary centre, with Presbyterian missionaries founding a famous educational centre known as Lovedale. Many of the current political leaders in South Africa were educated here and at the University of Fort Hare, which was established to cater for the needs of black graduates from Lovedale and other schools.

The University of Fort Hare is the repository of the archives of the African National Congress
and houses one of the most significant collections of African Art on the continent.

http://www.ectourism.co.za/city/24/Alice

History: Alice can trace its origins back to the Glasgow Missionary Society, who started a mission called Lovedale back in 1824. The station was abandoned during the sixth frontier war of 1834-5, and yet again in the seventh frontier war ten years later! It was in the latter war that the buildings were converted into a fort, and only once peace had returned, could the town start developing itself again. A proper fort, a hospital and a school were built. The fort was named Fort Hare after Major-General John Hare while the new development was named Alice after Sir Harry Smith's sister, although he claimed to have named it after one of Queen Victoria's daughters. Today Lovedale is an important educational institution that includes a theological department as well as a department that trains nurses. Although regarded as a second-class university and known as a "tribal" university under the apartheid regime, Fort Hare University is one of the most historically important universities in South Africa. Many prominent African leaders including Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, Tanzania's Julius Nyere, our very own President Thabo Mbeki and most famous of course, Nelson Mandela, cut their political teeth on this campus.

Alexandria - 2 days, 36km (Eastern Cape)

Beginning at the fire station south of Alexandria, the relatively easy Alexandria trail first passes through the Alexandria forest, one of the finest indigenous forests in the Eastern Cape. Bushbuck, blue duiker, bush pig and vervet monkey occur, and the forest represents the most southerly distribution of the trumpeter hornbill. Before reaching the overnight hut, the trail runs parallel to a wild section of the coast. On the second day the hike crosses the Alexandria dunefield, South Africa¹s largest active dune system, before returning to the forest station.

"In the afternoon a close inspection of Fort Liddle was followed by an early return to Greytown to enable members to enjoy the last rugby test match on TV. Sunday morning saw the party at Fort Perseverance near Ahrens and at Fort Cherry beyond Kranskop, again ably guided by Mrs. Gordon. A picnic lunch was enjoyed on the Gordon's farm nearby which also offered one of the most magnificent views imaginable. Then followed a call at Fort Buckingham near the Kop it self, and on the way back, between Kranskop and Stanger a visit to Fort Cross at Balcombe's Hill. At the latter site it was noted with great consternation that the KwaZulu Department of Works had opened a huge gravel pit right next to the fort, and that the powershovels have already destroyed one of the trenches and have severely undermined one of the bastions. This existing and further threatened damage was brought to the notice of the KwaZulu authorities the following day, and it is hoped that further damage will be averted."

Acornhoek (L7) -9

Acornhoek

Near Hoedspruit

Limpopo, South Africa (Mbendi - nothing)

10600 Google hits on 13 June 2008

Read this about the area:

But some like Dr Paul Pronyk, director of the Rural AIDS & Development Action Research (RADAR) Programme based in Limpopo, believe that more money is not necessarily what the province needs.

RADAR is attached to the University of the Witwatersrand’s School of Public Health that has been working with Tintswalo Hospital, Limpopo’s second largest hospital, for the past 20 years. Pronyk has been based at Tintswalo, a rural hospital in Acornhoek, for the past 6 years. A softly-spoken American, Pronyk does not fit the archetypal image of a rural doctor. Dressed in chinos, trendy leather sandals and wearing a bandana on his head, Pronyk believes the fact that he has been at his post for six years is evidence that things are improving. He shares a bustling and cluttered office located a few metres from the hospital with several field workers, researchers and other doctors.

Situated in the former Bushbuckridge homeland area, Acornhoek is historically inhabited by Shangaan and Sotho-speakers.

Acornhoek presents an interesting profile of an area that suffers from significant population level factors that influence HIV transmission. These include mobility and migration; gender inequality (rape and gender based violence are common) and extreme levels of poverty and underdevelopment.

Historically people who now live in Acornhoek settled all the way up to Phalaborwa in the north and down to Nelspruit in the south, but in the 1940s and 50s people were forcibly removed to “homelands” including Acornhoek. Today at least 750 000 people have settled here. About 25% of residents in the Bushbuckridge area are Mozambican refugees, chronically displaced as a result of the civil war. This has resulted in ongoing trans-migration between Acornhoek and southern Mozambique.

Also, 60% of the local men migrate to work, mainly to the mines and other industries in Gauteng and Mpumalanga, some working as labourers on Limpopo farms. Men often only return home twice a year and this has profound implications in terms of social and familial cohesion and gender relationships.

Visitors to Tintswalo Hospital in Acornhoek cross a small bridge over a railway track. It’s impossible to ignore “Elite Funerals” an undertaking concern painted a cheerful purple and that is situated just to the left of the hospital’s main gate.

Tintswalo is a collection of outbuildings, some prefabricated, others with peeling paint. A few new brick buildings house the admin section. The buildings are linked by covered walkways that offer scant shelter when the heavens open.

Before 1994, the bridge divided Acornhoek. Below the line was declared Shangaan while above was Sotho. If you happened to be Sotho and fell ill, you’d be treated at Mapulaneng Hospital, about 30km to the south.

Pronyk explains that doctors and nurses refused to treat patients deemed to be from the “wrong area”.

“Doctors wouldn’t care for you, nurses wouldn’t care for you, pastors wouldn’t minister to you in your language. You needed an ID to come in and it was a pretty dramatic thing at the time. Since transition it’s been a real struggle to define district boundaries and rationalize referral patterns based on geographical proximity rather on what ethnic group you belong to,” he explains.

Often those who are successful in managing regional structures in Limpopo are outsiders who don’t get caught up in old political squabbles.

Getting anything to grow in Acornhoek is almost impossible. The climate is extreme and water is scarce, a situation exacerbated by the commercial forestry industry in the area. The water infrastructure that does exist is mostly stand alone and not well co-ordinated. Apart from this, maintenance of this infrastructure is poor.

The result of poor access to water and food is borne out in the nutrition ward at Tintswalo that is often filled with children with Kwashiorkor or Marasmus, consequences of severe malnutrition.

The 2000 South African Health Review rated Limpopo as the province with the worst levels of stunting in the country - 34.2% of children between six and 71 months.

“You see this all the time here at Tintswalo Hospital and that was long before HIV was a problem,” Pronyk adds, pointing out that malnutrition and diarrhoeal disease are the primary causes of death in young children in the area.

Another snippet:

The Department is also aware that there are several more dense areas in this municipality which require potential new waterborne solutions and/or upgrade of existing systems, such as Acornhoek, which comprises of a college, a business complex, a hospital, as well as high density residential areas. The present sanitation service of the Acornhoek urban core comprises septic tanks, pit latrines and localized small sewage systems. Sewage management at present is inadequate and pollution via sewage discharges and seepage towards the Acornhoek Dam has been observed. The Department funded a project to the value of R1,3 million comprising repairs and upgrading of the Ntentswalo installation, outfall sewer and new ponds, which was completed in July 2005.

THE TRANSIT OF VENUS: Apart from the local observations at the Royal Observatory, Cape of Good Hope and Natal Observatories the British transit committee send out to South Africa another four instruments and they were manned at two sights, namely Montagu Road (renamed Touwsrivier) and Aberdeen Road. All the South African sights experienced clear conditions although a strong wind was a factor at Montagu Road. All stations managed to make successful observations. For more information on the British efforts in South Africa read the article by Koorts - MNASSA April 2004, Vol. 63 nos. 3 & 4, pp. 34 - 57.

http://www.saao.ac.za/assa/html/his-exp-transit_venus.html

"Humans are very inquisitive. We want answers to questions but do not always know how to answer them. For most of the general public an answer that borders on myths, based on no factual basis, usually suffice. For most of mankind's history anyone could have given you any old answer and we could not have known if the answer was correct. To find the correct answer took millennia and a great many brilliant minds spend unknown hours pondering over the problem, instead of indulging in life's other distractions. 300 Years ago the transits of Venus were seen as the solution to the problem. It sadly turned out no to be so. The Sun Earth distance answer had to be solved by other methods.

Using the transits of Venus as a method turned out to be costly with lots of wasted energy and talent. It was an impractical method. However, the moral of the story is that even though with hindsight we tend to criticize and know better, at one time in our past it was a brilliant idea. Actually it was probably the best idea we ever had to solve this particular problem. More than that, it still is a good idea. Today we have the technology to solve the practical aspects, which flummoxed the 18th century astronomers. But because the distance problem was successfully solved by other means we don't need the transit method anymore. Sad, isn't it?"

Scary, isn't it? http://assa.saao.ac.za/html/his-exp-transit_venus.html http://www.eternitypress.co.za/freshair/chronicl.htm
